2006 Fall TV Preview - Six to Watch
Here we are again at a new TV Fall Schedule. I couldn't be more excited about the returning favorites - "Lost", "Battlestar Galactica", "The Office", "Desperate Housewives", and others.
But there are new shows that are being added. Every year, it's a gamble. Which new shows do you invest your time with, knowing that any of them could never see a second season (or sometimes even a complete first season - "Reunion" anyone??)
With no keepers in last years season's new shows lot and TONS of disappointments: "Invasion", "Commander In Chief" and the aforementioned "Reunion" - the 2005 Fall Schedule left a lot to be desired. Here is hoping 2006's fairs better.
Out of all the new shows being added to the lineup - there are only 6 I am going to be adding to MY own personal schedule (Thank God for TiVo!)
Here is the list of the six shows that will try their luck in our household. Will there be any keepers this season?? Any new shows that will actually make it to season two?? Only time will tell.
Here they are in order of hopefulness.....
1. Heroes (NBC) Mondays 8pm
This is one that I am most excited about. It's premise is pretty interesting. 9 normal human beings find themselves with SUPERHUMAN strengths and abilities. Is this the next step in the evolution of modern man? Or a more sinister plot by some evil organization? The beginning of the Justice League??
There are a lot of things that I like about this one. I think (if it catches on) there are a lot of ways this show could go. (I'm seeing big season finales with the "Heroes" banding together to fight an ultimate evil or possibly each other - you know there has to be evil "Heroes" in this bunch)
It will be very interesting to see how it progresses. Plus - it has an invincible cheerleader in it!! (God - I miss Buffy!!)
2. 30 Rock (NBC) Wednesday 7:30pm
Definitely, the comedy I am looking forward to! Love Tina Fey. Love Tracy Morgan. And if you have seen any of the last season of "Will & Grace", then you know how funny Alec Baldwin can be! He really surprised Hollywood with razor-sharp comic timing humor. It is about time this former "hairy hottie" comes back to TV. Just hope his dry sense of humor comes with!!
I think this is going to be a great ensemble. Tina Fey has proven to be a strong comedic writer for "SNL" - and I think this will carry over to her new show. Unfortunately, Rachel Dratch has been pushed back a little out of the spotlight, but any show that features her (either great or small) will be on my Must See List.
3. Ugly Betty (ABC) Thursday 7pm
Executive Producer Salma Hayek (Juaa Klllaazzzyy!) comes the American version of a very popular telenovela "Yo soy Betty, la fea" (I'm Betty, the Ugly). America Ferrera stars as the title character - a "regular" gal working in the high fashion industry. (Think "Devil Wears Prada" meets "Working Girl" meets "The Ugly Duckling".)
This "dramedy" has really won me over with its hilarious and very heartwarming promos.
This looks like it could be pretty good - but it also seems like it could be a "one-trick-pony". How many seasons can they play the ugly card? How long does the "fish-out-of-water" premise last?
Those are the questions that will be placed once "Ugly Betty" hits the TV mid-Sept. I believe the answers will lay with Ferrera. If she can pull this off, and win America's heart - this could be hit and will make her a household name. I like her - so I wish her luck!!
4. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC) Mondays 9pm
The only sure-fire hit of the season. Critics are applauding it, and preview audiences have raved. People both behind the scenes (Producer/Writer - Aaron Sorkin) and in front of the camera (Matthew Perry) have credentials for strong TV past.
I have to admit - I saw this tonight - and it is good. Very "West Wing" meets "SNL". Fast paced and witty - this one will stick around. The pilot episode sets up many different story lines and begins to show the connections and layers that flow under the surface between characters. It's premise and style haven't been a favorite of mine in the past - but this could be a keeper.
5. Brothers and Sisters (ABC) Sunday 9pm
The newest nighttime family soap has already had some behind the stage trauma: Betty Buckley (Eight is Enough) was replaced by Sally Field (2-time Oscar Winner) as Mona - the matriarch of the Walker family - after the second week of filming and promo photo shoots (see original cast above). Personally, I like the last minute change. Sally Field is much more watchable and has more of an edge than Betty. I am not sure Buckley would have enhanced the show.
Not that the show needs much enhancement with a cast comprised of people that I like:
Ron Rifkin - (Sloane from "Alias")
Rachel Griffiths (the best thing about "Six Feet Under")
Balthazar Getty (hot guy)
Dave Annable (even hotter guy)
Not too happy about Calista Flockhart. That fish face isn't gonna fit - I can tell you now.
I do like the family dynamic of this one, and can't wait to see these actors work together for form a TV family. Definitely has potential.
6. The Nine (ABC) Wednesday 9pm
The best thing this series has going for it is that if follows "Lost" on ABC. Of course, that didn't help "Invasion" last year. Let me say that is a good thing for this show in my household, if not for "Lost". Wouldn't watch "The Nine" if it didn't follow it.
Little is known about this mystery drama. All we know is nine people "experience" something inside a bank during a robbery that changes each of them forever. What it is or what happened in the bank is not known at this time.
Perhaps, it will be a blessing that its lineup is the reason I will watch. Maybe those secrets yet to be revealed with make me come back for more.....
That is it. The six new shows that I have "Season Pass"-ed this Fall Season. Who will stay? Who won't make it past two episodes? Which one am I going cry about when it gets cancelled?
Only time will tell.......
